What is the best hair spray to use for avant garde hair

I am learning and trying to design an avant garde hair, Just wondering what kind of hair spray they use to make the hair so stiff and hard? or any suggestion would be appreciated.

it would have to be some kind of a 'paste or gel' for the designs to stay put.. go on line and look..
