Jan,adding something to storebought hair color probably isn't going to result in the healthy beautiful hair you hope to have. First, are you using a permanent color? When you do your retouch, do you apply ONLY to the new growth, or to the whole head? That's a common mistake made with home color. The shaft is repeatedly being exposed to peroxide and ammonia it doesn't need. In salons,a seperate product is used on the "cold shaft" if needed to refresh the color.
Also, are you overusing any styling products? Some cause serious buil-up, resulting in dull lifeless hair. If you think you might have this problem, try a good clarifying shampoo and leave the lather on 2-3 minutes, then rinse & condition. Above all, don't neglect getting regular trims! On your type of hair, they are ultra important! That one thing is better for your hair than any product you can apply to it!
