Aveeno vs Cetaphil: Battle of Two Popular Moisturizers

Sharing is caring!

This article will clear some of the questions you may have in mind when comparing Aveeno vs Cetaphil.

Though there are dozens of brands out there, both Aveeno and Cetaphil are two of the most popular brands people associate with when buying their moisturizers.

However:

The fact that they have a lot of similarities confuses people on which to choose. How do you know which one to choose when both products do similar things and are both effective. They’re both backed by reputable brands. The price difference isn’t by a wide margin too.

And:

If you find yourself wondering whether you should choose Aveeno or Cetaphil, continue reading this article. At the end of this guide, you should be able to decide which brand is the most suitable for you.

Before comparing, let’s look at some of the important factors to consider when choosing a moisturizer.

Here’s what you’ll learn:

  • What to look for when choosing
  • A brief description of what you’ll get from each package
  • How to know which one is cruelty-free
  • The ingredients in each moisturizer

Things to Keep In Mind When Buying

Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion (Our Pick)

  • It’s easier to use
  • Better ingredients list
  • More moisturizing and relaxing
  • Easier to store and file away
  • Comes in various packaging

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion (Budget Pick)

 Aveeno vs Cetaphil

  • Inexpensive
  • Fragrance-free
  • Leaves no greasy spots
  • Use as a facial lotion
  • It’s easily absorbed into the skin

The first point is to consider your skin type. If you have normal, well-balanced skin, you probably won’t have any problem when choosing a moisturizer as it’ll absorb into your skin more easily.

However, if your skin is oily, it may have difficulty absorbing the lotion. Looking at both products, the Aveeno Moisturizer will be more suitable for oily/dry skin.

The second point should be how you want to use the product. If you intend to use it on your face in addition to your arms and legs, Aveeno will be more suitable for you.

This is even more important if you have oily skin. The grease from Cetaphil might linger a bit longer so that your face becomes greasy and unsightly. You should also consider what you want to achieve after applying the product repeatedly.

If you’re looking for a moisturizing lotion that’ll leave your skin soft and fresh, you should go with Cetaphil. It has a better moisturizing effect than Aveeno so you don’t have to apply it multiple times a day.

Aveeno vs Cetaphil: The Ingredients

Is It the Right One?

This is one of the sections that most want to see. What does the product contain? Is it suitable for your skin? Will you get allergic reactions from using it?

I also like to write this section of the article because it’ll help you decide quickly which one is for you. One of the advantages of Cetaphil over Aveeno is that it doesn’t routinely cause breakouts on the skin nor does it clog the pores.

This is because it contains cleaner ingredients such as Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, which softens and moisturizes the skin, and Persea Gratissima Oil, which activates faster absorption into the skin.

Aveeno, on the other hand, contains Isopropyl Palmitate, which is an emollient and thickening agent that might promote pore-clogging. If you have dry/oily skin and are afraid of getting your pores blocked, stay clear of Aveeno. You’re better off with Cetaphil.

Which One Is Better?

If you’re looking for a cheaper alternative, Aveeno is your best option. It’s cheaper than Cetaphil. But if you want a less-irritating lotion, Cetaphil is better as they have a better ingredient list.

Pricing of Both Brands

Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion

Currently, both Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion and Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion have thousands of reviews, with the Aveeno scoring more reviews compared to Cetaphil. Also, there is a difference in the pricing of both products.

Cetaphil comes in 16 Oz (1 pack), 16 Fl Oz (2 Pack), 16 Fl Oz (3 Pack), 4 FL Oz (3 Pack), 2 Fl Oz (12 Pack), and a combo. The lowest price comes with the 16 Oz (1 pack). It is more expensive, compared to Aveeno, which is extremely cheap.

Therefore, if the price is important to you, you may want to go with Aveeno. Fortunately, it works as well as Cetaphil so there isn’t going to be a compromise due to the price difference.

Aveeno vs Cetaphil: Scent

As far as smell goes, most reviews on both products have nothing but good things to say about them. Some customers stated that the smell of both products goes away very quickly.

This means that using any of Cetaphil or Aveeno isn’t going to clash with your Cologne. So, if you’re looking for a fragrance-free, soft-scented moisturizer, you can choose either of them and you’ll be alright.

Brief Description of the Lotions

Keep these in mind:

Both come in the regular pump bottle which allows easy pumping. The packaging for both products is decent and the pump action is simple so you don’t make a mess when using it.

The Aveeno bottle is sleekier, taller, and more stylish. It comes in a cream color with green labeling. Cetaphil bottle is bulkier and comes in pure white striped with blue labeling.

In terms of storage, I think Cetaphil will be easier to store and it’ll have more stability on a shelf. However, that’s not necessarily an advantage as the Aveeno bottle is also suitable for easy storage.

The bottles are going to take a rough beating so you can reuse them after exhausting the cream from them.

Which One Should You Go for?

Both products are gentle to sensitive and dry skin. If you have sensitive skin that dries easily, you need a good lotion that’ll go on your skin and not irritate it.

Fortunately, both products are fragrance-free so if you’re allergic to that, you won’t be bothered. And since they’re both lights, you can use them on your face too.

Similarly, both Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion and Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Lotion can be used every day on your skin. They don’t leave your skin greasy, which makes both a lot easier to use.

These are just some of the similarities between the Cetaphil and Aveeno moisturizers. As for the differences, Cetaphil comes in safer and better ingredients and as a result, feels more moisturizing and relaxing.

As for Aveeno, it’s cheaper and is quickly absorbed into the skin. Moreover, it’s also more suitable for facial application since it doesn’t leave a watery or oily residue like other lotions.

Because of the better ingredient list, I’ll recommend the Cetaphil lotion. However, if you want the most affordable of the two and don’t mind the ingredient list, you should go for Aveeno.

Is Aveeno Cruelty-Free?

The short answer is that Aveeno is not cruelty-free. This means that the company finances animal testing, which doesn’t always sound nice to pet owners.

The owner of Aveeno, Johnson & Johnson Company, conducts tests on animals, so if you’re looking for a cruelty-free brand, you’ll be disappointed. But what about Cetaphil?

Is Cetaphil Cruelty-Free?

Like Aveeno and many other brands, Cetaphil is also one of the companies that test on animals so it’s also not cruelty-free.

If that’s the case, how do you decide which one to choose? The truth is that there are a lot of other products we might have in our kitchen or home that fall under this category.

You probably have the Johnson & Johnson baby cream or lotion for your baby. I’ve used their products before. So, unless you’re an animal advocate, there may not be anything you can do about this.

How Good Are the Reviews on Both?

The reviews on both Aveeno Moisturizing Lotion and Cetaphil Moisturizing Lotion are overwhelmingly positive. Many users found their skins freshen up and look better than before they started using these lotions.

Again, a lot of reviewers claim that they like that both products are fragrance-free and can both be used for daily moisturizing. If you have dry skin and are looking for an everyday moisturizing cream, both Aveeno and Cetaphil will work well for you.

I also like that a lot of people mentioned they’re able to reduce redness and mild acne they have, especially on the face. You can also read Biotera vs Biolage or Loreal vs Wella.

Aveeno vs Cetaphil: Conclusion

As you can see from the preceding paragraphs, Aveeno and Cetaphil are phenomena brands. They both have their weakness and strengths though.

Where one is more suitable for a certain skin type, another brings more moisture to the skin when used. Although there is a price variation between the two brands, it’s not by a large margin.

If you buy one over the other because it’s cheap, you’d have saved only a few dollars. If that’s important to you, by all means, go for the inexpensive ones. In this case, that’s Aveeno.

  1. I have a oily and acne prone skin. Which one of the two will be good for me?

  2. Cetaphil contains sodium lauryl sulphate for a start, which is a known skin irritant! I have full body atopic eczema and extremely dry skin and get Aveeno Skin Relief on repeat prescription. It’s been a life saver! The active ingredients, colloidal oatmeal and Shea butter, are superb emollients for dry skin.
