Vaniply vs Vanicream: Which Ointment is Best for You?

Sharing is caring!

While Aquaphor and Vanicream seem to be popular ointments, there are a lot of other quality brands out there you may not have heard of. One of them is Vaniply.

While I was researching similar brands to Aquaphor, all I was able to come up with was Cerave, Vanicream, and the likes. However, looking through my archives, I can see that a lot of people want to know about Vaniply.

After researching the brand, I came to the realization that it’s high quality, just like other big names.

Therefore, I want to look at how Vaniply compares to the rest of the big-name brands starting with Vanicream.

Vaniply vs Vanicream

If you’ve ever been faced with dry, itchy, or irritated skin, you know how frustrating it can be. You won’t be able to concentrate on what you’re doing. And the feeling that the ailment should go immediately will linger on.

In that case, you can either be patient or find a reliable ointment to use to help solve it.

Fortunately, there are dozens of brands out there you can pick from. They don’t just help relax and soothe your nerves.

They can also return that comfort that has waned due to the inconvenience of the pain/itching.

It’s equally important to know that having such a product is essential if you regularly run, bike, or engage in similar activities. This is because you’ll likely develop some skin problems due to that activity.

And don’t forget that winter itch too!

A tube of ointment can keep shut the door to the inconvenience.

Update: Vanicream has rebranded the Vaniply Ointment as Vanicream Ointment. Therefore, both products in this article are one and the same.

Vaniply vs Vanicream: Which is Better?

The first thing you need to know is that both Vaniply and Vanicream are made from the same company. However, Vanicream is more of a lotion while Vaniply is more like a Vaseline.

Therefore, they aren’t technically comparable because they do slightly different jobs.

Vaniply Ointment: What Is It? Is It Beneficial?

Vaniply vs VanicreamThe Vaniply Ointment is an occlusive and non-greasy emollient. If you don’t know what that is…occlusive is an agent that helps prevent water loss.

It’s used in moisturizers and similar to humectants. Emollient is closely related and the non-greasy part means it’s less greasy and easily absorbs into the skin.

If you have irritated skin, atopic dermatitis (eczema), winter itch, psoriasis, the Vanicream Ointment can be a very good treatment.

This ointment is made with 1% dimethicone, which is an effective skin barrier against irritants.

If you develop dermatitis or eczema, you can use it to treat any of these conditions. Although it’s used as a treatment, it can equally prevent them.

Dimethicone is also a moisturizer because it helps prevent water loss in the skin. This means that you can use Vaniply as a moisturizer. So if you’re suffering from dry, sensitive skin, you can try it out.

Most people are careful with personal care products with dimethicone, fearing that it can exacerbate acne.

However, the CIR (Cosmetic Ingredient Review) has deemed it safe for use in skin care products. Not only that but the FDA also approved to be used as a skin protectant in over-the-counter products.

So, if you have been wary of products with dimethicone as the active ingredient, I hope this will allay your fear.

The Vaniply Ointment is equally free from parabens, fragrances, dyes, masking fragrances, lanoline, formaldehyde, and other preservatives.

Free from these chemicals, it’s natural. Though not cruelty-free, it’s free from most of the chemical substances that can aggravate your irritation.

If you have Seborrheic dermatitis and cannot use Aquaphor or Vaseline, then this is a good alternative to try out. Some users state that it doesn’t make their condition worse compared to the others.

So, if you find yourself in a similar situation, you might want to try out this.

Another good thing about this product is that it has fewer ingredients. And with minimal ingredients, you don’t have many things to be allergic to.

Vanicream Ointment: What Is It? Is It Beneficial?

Vaniply vs Vanicream

Aside from its many moisturizing creams, Vanicream also has an ointment. This is a very expensive one and has a few differences with the Vaniply Ointment.

The Vanicream Ointment is petroleum-based and can serve as an excellent treatment for dry skin. It’s also dermatologist-recommended.

The ingredients in this version are very similar to that of Vaniply. In fact, they have the same active ingredient – Dimethicone. So, you can expect to get similar results whichever you decide to go for.

The Ointment has the NEA Seal of Acceptance, indicating that it’s safe for individuals with sensitive and dry skin to use it.

Also, if you have dry cracked skin, chafed lips, chapped hands, etc., due to the effect of the weather, this product can help you treat them.

It’s similar to Vaniply in that it can improve the skin’s moisture retention as well as up its protective barriers.

It also doesn’t contain any irritants so it should be safe for use. The formula is non-greasy, and so is less messy. It spreads easily, gluten-free, and can be used by both adults and children.

While some of the benefits have been mentioned, you can specifically apply Vanicream for the following:

  • Protecting skin from weather conditions
  • Treat cracked or dried feet/hand
  • Soothe chapped lips
  • Reduce chafing from exercises
  • Relieve skin irritation

Vaniply vs Vanicream: Differences

One of the major differences between Vaniply and Vanicream is that Vaniply is greasier than Vanicream. Vanicream is lighter while Vaniply is thicker and more creamy.

Vanicream has a lotion texture to it while Vaniply is more of a thick texture similar to that of petroleum jelly.

Vaniply may be cheaper than Vanicream though. Moreover, Vanicream can make eczema worse. It’ll be better to go for Vaniply if you’re suffering from eczema or have very dry skin.

Final Words: Vaniply or Vanicream?

Both products are good.

If you are working with a tight budget, then go for Vaniply. It’s cheaper and offers similar benefits to Vanicream. It’s important to understand that the same brand produces these products.

So, if there are going to be differences, it’s not going to be much. Now, it’s more about choosing one that you know will likely work for you.

  1. They actually changed the formulation when they changed from Vaniply Ointment to Vanicream Ointment… I wish someone could tell me the differences in the original vs the new branded version… But key to the differences that you missed are that these are petroleum FREE, not petroleum based. BIG deal to people allergic to petroleum.

  2. I’m looking for the very same answer, Vaniply ointment only had dimethicone as an active ingredient. Vanicream ointment seems to have quite a few other active ingredients and it doesn’t work as well for my lips when I get an eczema flare. What other ointment can you buy that only contains one active ingredient, dimethicone?

    1. Hi Diana,

If you’re asking about other possible ointments, then I can recommend Aquaphor or CeraVe. They’re both good and very popular. If you’re buying for dry lips or to use as lip balm, you can go with Aquaphor.

However, if you’re looking for an ointment with just one active ingredient like dimethicone, then I haven’t come across one. I checked for you and most have more than one active ingredient.

Let me know if you still have any questions.

      Thank you for reading.
