ppd free hair dye
by: Anonymous

Hi Cat,
I feel your pain.
the ingredient you may be allergic to is phenylenediamines < also known as PPD.
i had black hair for a long time but all of a sudden when i went do do a root touch up took a nasty allergic reaction and was told by my dermatologist i was allergic to this.
unfortunately there is no black permanent hair dye that doesnt contain PPD, as it is an essential ingredient for the dark colouring.
i have to get my hair stripped now and go a much lighter colour which i am devastated about.
although, websites like smartbeautyuk have permanent dyes which dont contain ppds at all, however their these colours do, natural black, hot chocoloate and passion plum.
hope i helped.
take care

Yes, you can get black hair without chemicals!!!
by: Anonymous

You can color your black with natural henna and indigo. You use the henna first, which will color your hair red. Immediately afterwards, you use the indigo. When used together with henna in this way, it will color your hair black.
There's a lot more detailed information at hennaforhair.com if you want to try it. They explain the whole process, how it works, how to apply, etc.

Henna and Indigo
by: Heather

Due to PPD I now use Henna on my grey hair but its very orange???? Be careful if you use Indigo; if you ever want to lighten your hair (highlights etc) your hair WILL GO BLUE. ?

ppd allergy
by: Paige

Hi Cat. I feel your pain. I am 54 and have always had very dark brown hair. I greyed in my early 30's and have dyed ever since, until the allergic reaction. I now have to have my hair stripped and go natural - white! I have tried many products and now work well and all stain my scalp making it look like a full scalp tattoo. I'm at a loss and need some help! With so many people having this problem why isn't there a decent product to help us!!!

PPD-free dye
by: Sil

Paige, try Surya Henna Cream. You can get it from topleaf.co.uk and I've been using it a while now. I'd tried a number of different PPD-free products but none are permanent and most don't cover grey 100%. Surya dark brown is the best I've found to date - its does cover 100% but it still washes out fairly quickly and I need to dye it every couple of weeks to keep on top of it.

your hair is gorgeous!
by: pen

Hi Kat
your hair is gorgeous! I have long naturally curly dark ash brown but unfortunately I have a big patch of white on top. When I am all white i will have no worries it will look great but right now, with most of it still dark, I need something for the roots and on top. The Surya Dark brown is not dark brown, its quite red. The so called black is a darker brown (when I put it on white paper) but it has not been able to cover the reddish tone or my white hairs beyond a light brown. I hate that red henna look on me!

I just found two more companies: ACT Naturals and Palette by Nature. I am going to try them.

I still think your hair is gorgeous white though!

act naturals
by: Anonymous

I'm going to try Surya Cream next. Very severe allergy to dye.
I use ACT Naturals and It turned my hair jet blue black except for the gray. It didn't cover it at all and I had my stylist friend apply it. Very messy and difficult to use. so I ended up with jet black hair and a terrible skunk line.

So frustrating!

ppd
by: maggiemagpie

I am also allergic to PPD. After years of dying my hair black I now use Henna (Colora). It is a great product but lasts only a couple of weeks, very easy to use and safe.
However as we speak I have a patch test on my arm to determine if Joico will cause an allergic reaction. So far so good. Normally I would experience a burning/itchy sensation within minutes of applying any hair color.
I may have finally found something that works...

by: ak47the greyguy

Help,
I have been grey since I was 15 (highschool was brutal to say the least) been using dye for years until a few years ago and can't find anything that doesn't give me the itchy- head. I know I am probably allergic to ppd. Tried hennalucent but doesn't come in a black or dark brown, if you all know of something that is ppd free and dark...I am listening

You may want to try Light Mountain Henna. It does not contain PPD.

Light Mountain Natural Hair Color & Conditioner, Dark Brown, 4 oz (113 g) (Pack of 3)

Dark brown seems to be the darkest they have. I hope it works for you.

ppd free hair dye
by: Anonymous

i spent 4 days in hospital after a severe reaction to hair dye. i have black hair and at only age 28 im starting to grey.luckily i made a full recovery. ppd is banned in most other european countires.it is now being put into underwear and cheap clothing. so beware. it should be anned here also. i use this hair dye and although it washes out pretty quickly its much safer.

No choice but to go grey?
by: Cheryl

I'm also allergic to PPD. What I do now is have foil hi-lights not touching the scalp. If tint does touch my skin I get an infection and then an allergic reaction with severe itching which lasts about 5 weeks and then the cycle repeats itself. Now I'm going to try hi-lights with the old cap method. I really don't want to go grey but might not have a choice
