Layers in wavy hair?

I have really wavy hair, and it's past my shoulders. I want layers in my hair, but i'm afraid that if i get it too short, it will be even "poofier". What should i do?

Go for it!

Layers are great for wavy hair. They lighten the load on the top and interior layers of your hair, resulting in a springier curl. And a few layers can diminish that triangular look that wavy/curly hair sometimes suffers from (i.e., flat on top, wide on the bottom).

A good stylist will help you determine what length to cut your layers. If you just want a bit of lightening and to add some shape, have longer layers added. If you want to add volume at the top of your head and liven up your curls a lot, then opt for shorter layers.

Because of your concern about "poofiness," I'd recommend you stick with longer layers (i.e., the last 3 inches of your hair).

All the best,

Want to take the plunge...
by: Emmy

I want to get rid of the triangular look my hair has with it being all one length. It's thick, frizzy and wavy, ends just below my shoulders and quite frankly looks a mess. Would layers help with taming the frizz? How many layers should I get? Also I have a round face, so could I still have layers without them making my face look rounder? Sorry for all the questions, I'm a complete novice when it comes to hair...thanks in advance :)

straight on top curly on bottom

i dont really know how to describe my hair; its sort of thin but theres loads of it and its not all the same style, its sort of in 2 different layers. the bottom layers are wavy/curly but the top layers are completely straight and sort of sit on the top of my hair and look as though they've been stuck on - its hideous! i always end up having to put up the top layers in a ponytail behind my head but im sick of having to have the same style and i want it all to be wavy/curly. ive heard that the hair can be weighed down and so if i get shorter layers on top they might go curlier, is this true? if so, how short do i have to go? ive had my hair very layered before in the past when i used to straighten it but i dont like the really layered look anymore. also i dont want to have to 'scrunch' my hair every day or anything like that, i just want it to be naturally all the same. thank you all in advance for any help, sorry this is so long :) xxx

How You Layer Depends...
by: Naiya

The one thing I don't see anyone saying is how to address the "flipped out" look you often get when someone "layers" your hair "by the book." If you have wavy hair, you may often find that the layers produce what I call "bull horns." You know, those little, stubborn things that whip outward from your head like ski jumps with little sharp points. Or you get the Reba look (flipped out layers) unintentionally. If this is what you do -not- want, I recommend a slight undercut to your layers to ensure that instead of naturally pushing UP when laying across the rounded shape of your skull, the angle of the layer pushes the hair down just enough to keep it from flipping outward. In other words, your stylist must hold the hair down and angle the scissors to create push from the top part of the, rather than hold it upward or outward and then let it fall. That technique is great for straighter hair, but it's a mess for the wavy hair that's somewhere between wave and straight. If you want to wash it and leave it, like I do, make sure your stylist -really- knows about wavy hair. AND NO RAZORS! :-.) That'll split your hair quicker than you can say, "Nooo!" If your stylist can't do it with a nice, sharp pair of scissors, go somewhere else. Razor = neat for two weeks, damaged for the rest. If you don't care about frizzy ends, go for it!

styling matters
by: Michelle

Another important factor with this hair type is how you style it. Many people have a routine where they shampoo/condition their hair, pat it dry with a towel, then run a brush or comb through it straight out of the shower (stretching out any waves or curls). Try the techniques in this article on styling naturally curly hair to enhance the curl pattern and avoid making the small mistakes that will diminish the waves in your hair as it dries.

Hope this helps,
