Shea Moisture is another American brand owned by Unilever.

The brand was founded in 1991 and focuses on body wash, shampoo and conditioner. Most of the popular products from the brand are those based on naturally coily and curly hair.

The brand has similar products to Cantu and the likes of Devacurl. 

Shea Moisture has an African background. However, it’s now sold almost everywhere, which means many are able to access it with ease.

The prices of their products are reasonable and are widely available in a lot of stores. If you have curly hair and looking for a brand that has products that’ll help you maintain it, then consider Shea Moisture.

About Devacurl

Devacurl started in 1994, 26 years ago in New York City by Lorraine Massey, an acclaimed author, and curl connoisseur. Then, it was only a small salon specializing in curly hair in the big city.

After seeing big success, the company decides it’ll make its own product to help as many people get the best of their curls. The promise is to make a product that is free from sulfate, paraben, silicone…100%.

Products that are free from animal ingredients – instead, packed with plant and natural ingredients.

A lot of their customers, while initially trusting the company have come to realize that it isn’t what it used to be.

Some felt that despite spending a lot of money, they’ve not been able to replicate the beauty of their naturally curly hair Devacurl gel products.

That’s why there are now a lot of searches for other brands – that can really replace them.

If you have thicker hair, then go for Shea Moisture as the texture is thick and might be too heavy and weigh down thinner hair.

On the other hand, Devacurl is suitable for fine hair so that’s what you should go for if you have thin hair. Also, Devacurl Supercream is cheaper than the Shea Moisture Curl Enhance and both are cruelty-free.

Similar to Shea Moisture, the Devacurl Supercream is enriched with coconut oil (Cocos Nucifera), Glycerin, Hydrolyzed Jojoba Protein, and a few other items.

Glycerin, as it’s known, is a moisturizer/humectant that traps moisture in the hair. This helps to keep the shaft soft and shiny. Cocos Nucifera (coconut oil) can help reduce baldness and assist in hair growth.

It’s also known to reduce protein loss in the hair. Hydrolyzed Jojoba Protein bonds to the hair and reduce friction which helps minimize hair breakage. It contains Cetyl Alcohol though.

Even though it’s an emollient and emulsifier, I personally wouldn’t buy it. I don’t want alcohol in any product I use on my body.

Shea Moisture Cream

The Devacurl Supercream is infused with coconut, compared to the Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing smoothie, which is infused with silk protein and neem oil.

Coconut oil is known to help moisturize and repair damaged hair and can also prevent dandruff. Neem oil, on the other hand, is more geared towards hair growth.

So, if your hair is not growing the way you want or you want it to be fuller, the Shea Moisture Cream is your best option. However, if you’re looking to enhance your hair’s moisture and hydration, then Devacurl is a suitable alternative. 

Devacurl vs Shea Moisture – Price

In terms of price, Shea Butter is more expensive than Devacurl, but not by a lot. I consider the price of both products to be fair though since they’re both cruelty-free.

I’m more inclined to Shea Moisture though since the reviews are positive. There is also no fear of hair loss or scalp damage occurring due to using Shea Moisture, compared to Devacurl. In all, you have to decide for yourself.

Devacurl vs Shea Moisture – Final Thought

As you can see, both brands have their specific strength and weaknesses. If you’re after hair growth, for example, your best option will be the Shea Moisture Cream, which is infused with Neem oil.

You also may want to consider the price. If you’re on budget, you may want to look more at Devacurl since it’s cheaper. At the end of the day, just choose what suits your preferences.
