23 Helpful Tips for Great Skin (You Can Apply Right Now)

Sharing is caring!

Looking for some simple tips to help you get that lovely, smooth, shiny skin tone? Following a skincare routine is one thing. It’s another thing to be consistent while also being aware of things to avoid so your efforts don’t go in vain.

Going from one skincare product to another isn’t the answer either. Sometimes, it’s a simple hack, other times, it could be just paying attention to certain things.

Note that this list isn’t by any means exhaustive; there are plenty of others, we choose to cover the important ones. Having said that…Here are some tips to help you get there:

23 Helpful Tips for Great Skin

1. Drink plenty of water every day. Your skin relies on the body’s overall fluid levels to maintain healthy hydration – a vital defense against the environment’s drying assault. Remember that coffee, tea, alcoholic drinks, and caffeinated colas are dehydrating. They can make skin dull and dry, and suppress circulation.

2. Before blow-drying hair, apply moisturizer to the face and neck. Aim blow-dryer away from exposed skin. If your scalp is dry, avoid blow-drying for a day or two. You’ll be pleased with the results.

3. Raise the moisture level in your home or office. Use a humidifier or place bowls of water around the house to increase the humidity indoors.

4. Carry Golden Door Moisture Mist for an occasional spritz during the day. This botanically-based formula contains humectants and vitamins to help retain moisture.

5. Use lukewarm water when cleansing your face. Instead of soap, apply a moisturizing cleanser such as our Confidante Cleanser or Imbue Milky Cleanser.

6. During the day, protect against chapped lips with Lanternshine – an emollient-rich treatment stick with SPF #15. In the evening, moisturize & heal dry lips with Lip Conditioner – a conditioning and emollient-rich treatment that is rich in humectants and vitamins.

7. Layering is an important technique. Just as several articles of clothing keep you warmer than one bulky layer, Skin-Cell Regenerator Complex and Rejuvenating Day (or any Golden Door moisturizer) can seal in moisture and form a nourishing, protective shield.

8. Read ingredients on skin and hair care products before buying. I’ve caught myself, not once but many times, reading the ingredients only after I’ve bought the product and then learning about them. Knowing about the common ingredients and what they comprise can help too.

9. This is mildly related to the above. Choose skincare products with naturally soothing ingredients such as chamomile, oat, grape seed, aloe vera, green tea, rose extract, and allantoin to calm over-stimulated nerve endings that initiate sun irritation.

Protecting Your Skin from the Sun

There is no hiding from the sun. You’ll encounter it in one way or the other; going to work, shopping, visiting, vacating, etc. And prolonged exposure can have some unwanted effects on your body.

Fortunately, there are certain things you can do to reduce the chances of skin problems arising from too much exposure to the sun.

Sun Protection Tips

10. Avoid exposure to the sun between 10-am and 3-pm when rays are at their strongest. Sometimes, this isn’t always possible; as long as you’re proactively avoiding direct exposure to the rays, you’ll be fine.

11. Be aware of reflections off water, snow, cement, sand, and other reflective surfaces that can double your exposure to ultraviolet light. It’s not only good for your body but also your eyesight. Note: Sun also penetrates water down to 10 feet.

12. Use sunscreen with a minimum of SPF #15, even on clear and cloudy days. Do not lengthen your exposure to the sun because you’re wearing sunscreen. Studies show that people, especially children, wearing sunscreen stay out in the sun about 22% longer than those who are not. Why? Because sunburn is nature’s way of reminding us that we’re overdoing it, and sunburn is delayed by sunscreens. Also, avoid deliberate tanning with indoor or outdoor light.

13. Apply sunscreen to dry skin 15 to 30 minutes before going outdoors, allowing proper absorption, and reapply every two hours, especially if you’re swimming or perspiring.

14. Apply sunscreen even if you’re wearing lightweight clothing. (A standard T-shirt provides SPF protection of only 6-8.)

15. Apply sunscreen to your lips and ears – two often-forgotten areas with the most potential for exposure to the sun’s rays.

16. Limit a child’s exposure to the sun. Apply sunscreen to children six months or older. Experts estimate that 80% of lifetime sun damage occurs in the first 18 years.

17. Augment sun protection lotions with a wide-brimmed hat, SPF-rated long-sleeved shirt and long pants, and possibly even gloves or other shields for the backs of your hands.

18. Wear sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection that filter at least 80% of sunlight. Not only are you protecting your eyesight, but the surrounding sensitive skin as well.

19. Avoid smoking. Some people don’t know that smoking can contribute to increased wrinkles, dialing down skin strength, and increasing the risks of cell skin cancer. One of the sacrifices anyone can make towards making their skin glow is to quit smoking.

20. Be Gentle on Your Skin This is self-explanatory. When you’re cleaning, avoid using rough items and stay away from strong soap. When you shave, do it carefully so you don’t cut yourself. And finally, don’t be afraid to moisturize and rehydrate dry skin. A moisturizer with a dose of SPF is a good one here.

21. Maintain a healthy diet. Plenty of researches have pointed to the immense benefits of keeping up with a strong, balanced, and healthy diet. Instead of going for junk food, go for plenty of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains. This ties in well with drinking plenty of water.

22. Go for Omega-3 fatty acids. Dermatologists have recommended fatty acids because of the high concentration of moisturizing oils which can help to increase the skin’s hydration.

23. Keep stress at a bare minimum. If you live in the city, you may find yourself getting stressed because of the fast-paced nature of your environment. Develop some principles (sleeping early, avoiding small talk, scaling back items on your to-do list) and stick to them confidently. This will bring more calm into your life, give you plenty of time to rest and destress so your skin can maintain its youthful looks.
