Is Dove Cruelty-Free in 2022? SHM Answers!

Sharing is caring!

Is Dove Cruelty-Free? No, but the brand is making effort in that direction.

Dove needs no introduction: as a drugstore in skincare and hair care.

This brand started as a small company in the USA in 1957. And they were the first to create non-dry beauty soap.

Now this company operates in over 80 countries and is a part of the Unilever Corporation.

It might very well be one of the most popular and well-known brands when it comes to skincare thanks to their marketing strategy and their motto “Embrace your inner beauty”.

However, is Dove cruelty-free? How is its testing policies?

Is Dove Cruelty-Free in 2021?

The short answer is “yes”.

The long answer is “Yes, but…”.

On their official site, Dove claims that they haven’t tested on animals for the past 30 years. The company uses alternative methods and even receiving the certification “Beauty without bunnies” of the anti-animal cruelty organization PETA.

This certification ensures that no animals are harmed in the making or testing of a particular brand of product. The official recognition also allows them to use their cruelty-free certification on their package.

Dove and Unilever have also made a joint call to ban animal testing worldwide.

However, the company does operate and sell products in China.

And here, the post-market animal testing is mandatory by law if the authorities suspect a particular product might pose a health hazard or hasn’t been tested carefully enough.

Finally:

Some of Dove’s products are manufactured in China. And on this matter, the brand agrees that the Chinese authorities can contact them if they have such a concern so they can remove the product from the shelves rather than use animal testing.

It is not clear how strict Dove is with their policy, seeing that they do manufacture batches of their products in China. And it sells these and other products in the country.

So they are in the grey when it comes to being a true and 100% cruelty-free brand.
