Olay Total Effects vs Regenerist: Which of the Two Brands Is Better?

Sharing is caring!

Looking for an in-depth, complete comparison of Olay Total Effects vs Regenerist? You’re on the right page. If you’re looking for established drugstore anti-aging brands, Olay is one of them.

While they started with the popular baby oil “beauty fluid” Olay now has a tone of body creams and cleansers. The Regenerist line is one of their top-selling brands.

A little about Olay

If Olay is your favorite brand, you don’t need any introduction. However, if you’ve just heard about it, you should at least know a little about the brand.

Why is this important?

It’ll help you decide if it’s a company you want to stick to or not. Also, you can gain some insights into how their products are shaped.

Graham Wulff, a South African Chemist founded the brand in 1952. Then, Olay wasn’t the name. The company started with pink cream named Beauty Fluid, hydrating cream for babies.

However, the product didn’t pick up momentum until the 1980s. As a result of its progress and growing awareness, the brand was renamed Olay in 1990.

Since then, they’ve shifted to producing more than just baby creams.

They have the Regenerist, aside from other popular lines like ProX, Total Effects, etc. In this guide, I’ll be focusing on Regenerist and comparing it to the Total Effects. Another future post may look at the ProX too.

Olay Total Effects vs Regenerist

The ingredients in Olay Total Effects and Regenerist are different. They also have unique formulas, which is why they work differently and are likely to give you distinctive results.

Total Effects houses a powerful formula that moisturizes and offers anti-aging benefits. The Total Effects, on the other hand, offers simple, balanced results.

Total Effects include mineral complex, Vitanicin, and vitamins, which are supposed to provide excellent moisturizing effects. Regenerist, on the other hand, is infused with amino-peptide, which helps in rejuvenating the skin’s outer layer, making it smooth and fresh.

If you’re in your late 20s, then go for the Olay Total Effects. It offers a simple and easy-to-use skincare routine for this age bracket. Regenerist, while not restricted to any age range, is ideal for older women.

While Olay Total Effects can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles and improve skin texture, the Olay Regenerist can help replenish the skin’s moisture barrier and elasticity.

According to the label, the Total Effect is suitable for reducing the occurrence of pores while Replenish is determined to smoothen and brighten the skin.

  1. I am 40+ and I can see dark spots on my face, I can feel as if my skin has become dull, which cream is recommended for me out of the 2 above?

    1. Hi Sonia,

Thank you for visiting. Both products are great for getting smooth and brighter skin. If you want the absolute best, then I’ll recommend you go for the Olay Regenerist.

  2. Hi I am 36 years I have dark spot and pigmentations which aging cream I want to use

    1. Hi Tabassum,

I understand your plight. It takes some courage to fight those sports and pigmentation. But if you’re patient and consistent, you should conquer them. Keep going!

As for the aging cream, I’ll give you the same advice that I gave to Sonia.

“Both products are great for getting smooth and brighter skin. If you want the absolute best, then I’ll recommend you go for the Olay Regenerist.”

  3. I am 37 years old and I started to have wrinkles, open pores and pigmentations. Can I use olay total effects and olay regenerist at the same time? Say, at the morning total effects and at night regenerist for immediate effect. And is whip good for oily skin? Because I have oily skin.

    1. Olay Effects can help minimize the appearance of pores as well as even the skin tone so it balances out. It can also lessen the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Also, they work differently. Regenerist renews the outermost layer of the skin so it looks younger. And yes, the Regenerist Whip is good for oily skin.

I don’t see any negative effects coming out of using them both. However, may I ask why you want to use both? Are you afraid just one wouldn’t be effective enough?

      Let me know.

  4. I’m 64 and have most always used oil of olay active hydrating hydration active lotion. I bought regenerist deep hydration regenerating cream, wrinkle correction serum, olay eyes ultimate eye cream and micro-sculpting cream oh I also got olay age defying classic cleaner and also the olay total effects 7 in one revitalizing foaming cleanser. I have normal skin…not oily or dry. I ran outside alot too. I want a regime for taking care of my skin but dont know what to use or what to use it with. Can you help me with what I should be using and when?

    1. Hi Sherry,

Here is a stripped-down regime for taking care of your skin:

      1. Wash your skin daily: A good cleanser is the best for this. Mature skin is prone to losing moisture and it’s natural oils faster than a younger one. So, it’s important to use a cleanser that can replenish the skin with moisture and oils. Since you have the Olay Age Defying Classic Cleanser and the Total Effects 7 in 1 Cleanser, you can use any of that. They’ll help in hydrating the skin and prevent it from drying out. Every morning and evening, lather the cleanser in wet hands before gently massaging it onto skin. Rinse thoroughly and pat dry.
      2. Make sure you exfoliate (weekly if possible). Exfoliating will drive away dead cells from the skin. So, you shouldn’t ignore this in your routine. For exfoliating, you can use Olay Age Defying Classic Cleanser. It contains Salicylic acid, which works by increasing the amount of moisture in the skin and dissolving the substance that causes the skin cells to stick together. This makes it easier to shed the skin cells. Exfoliate once or twice a week.
      3. Apply a serum. Now that your skin is cleansed, it’s time to correct wrinkle skin and fine lines with a serum. Use the Wrinkle Correction Serum you already bought. Make sure it’s applied on your skin immediately after cleansing. Once in the morning and at night. It can also take the place of a moisturizer — just get a few drops on your hand and smoothen it over your face and neck and allow to absorb into the skin.
      4. Moisturize your face. Use the Olay Active Hydrating Hydration Active Lotion. The Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream can be used too. Apply it all over your face, neck, and chest area in the morning and evening (use the cream on top of your serum).
      5. Use your eye cream to target visible signs of aging there too. This includes dry circles, wrinkles, and fine lines. Fortunately, you have the Olay Eyes Ultimate Eye Cream. Apply a small amount around your entire eye area using your fingertips and pat gently until thoroughly absorbed. Use morning and night.
      6. Apply a facial oil in the morning. Since you have normal skin, you can skip this. It’s good to get a good product for this when your skin starts to feel dry.
      7. For removing makeup (which I doubt you still use at this stage), use Miscela water. There are a couple we’ve reviewed on the blog.
      8. If you want, you can use a deep cleansing moisturizer at night for more wrinkle-fighting. The Olay Regenerist Deep Hydration Regenerating Cream can be applied here.

  5. Hi! I’m a mom with 2 kids age of 40. My skin is dry and light fair skin. I recently purchased oil of olay regenerate whipped SPF 40. and I love it, but it was expensive. Is it ok

    1. Hi Celine,

Yes, you’re good to go. It’s even better that you love it. Some people get skin reactions at their first try but you didn’t. That’s the most important.

      1. I purchased the olay Regenerist retinol 24 night and the olay regenerist microsculpting cream. Does the red jar cream ( microsculpting) have spf or do I still have to purchase an spf when going outside?

        1. Hi Nikki,

The Olay Regenerist Micro-sculpting Cream comes in different versions. Some have SPF while some don’t have. Having said that, the most popular one, which is most likely the one you’re talking about, doesn’t have SPF.

If it’s this ONE, then it doesn’t have. One of those that have SPF that I’m talking about is this ONE.

Let me know if you have further question.

  6. I am 47 and have been using the same low maintenance skin regime since my 20’s and it’s no longer working. I wash my face, apply moisturizer with an SPF and then apply my makeup over that. At night I wash my makeup off with your foaming cleanser, apply some eye cream and more moisturizer. That’s it, then I go to bed.
I want a new regime as my skin is not looking good. I have a dullness and age spots.
I want help with products including scrubs and masks.
I would love the order of how to put them on and then put my makeup on. I have always liked your products and want to expand on what and how I use them.

    1. Hi Suborna,

Go with Olay Total Effects. It’s cheaper and filled with humectants to keep your body hydrated.

  7. Hi, I just turned 47 this month. I normally use your Oil of Olay lightweight moisturizer with SPF. My skin has always been very dry but has become really really dry lately. My biggest problem is dullness, dryness and wrinkles on my face and around my eyes. I want to use Oil of Olay products but I’m not sure which ones to choose. PS I always get the white colored moisturizer with SPF in the white bottle with black writing because I don’t like the smell of the normal Oil of Olay pink moisturizer. Do the eye creams and Regenerist have the same smell as the pink lightweight moisturizer that has been around forever? Also I would like to get a night cream that does it have an overwhelming smell .Thank you!

  8. I’m 65 years young and have used Total Effects since my mid-20s. No one believes my age and am always told what beautiful skin I have. I love Total Effects so is there a reason I should consider Regenerist?

    1. Hi Lynn,

That’s good to hear. I wouldn’t advise you to leave Total Effects for Regenerist. Unless you just want to test how Regenerist works and how your skin might react to it. In this case, I’ll say “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it”.

      1. Thank you for your thoughts. That was what I have been thinking too, no fix needed here!!

  9. Hi . I’m 31 years old. I Need your suggestions and advice to choose best face wash , moisturiser n serum suit for my face . My skin is is dry in surface & oily inside . I have some pores and also dark sports & uneven tone . Which one Type I should go for it

    1. Hi,

You can go for the Garnier face wash discussed in this article. The Ordinary also has a good serum. Also, the Olay Total Effects 7 in 1 Anti-Ageing Day Moisturizer in this article is equally a good moisturizer.

Aside from that, Olay also has a Micro-Sculpting Serum, also present in this article. Let me know if you need more info or have extra questions.

  10. I am 49 years old, for years I have been struggling to get my face clear, even and moisturize, on the surface you might think it is oily but inside is dry at times I would apply vaseline just to get it soft, wrinkles and fine lines are my second problem,my last problem is the uneven skin tone face and neck very dark, so which product can I use

    1. Hi Lindiwe,

Have you tried the Regenerist? Some of what you’re complaining about are what the product can help you treat.

  11. I am in my mid 50ies and have uneven, saggy, lifeless skin. I presently use Clinique Moisture Surge and like it because it is lightweight and smooth to put on. But I am not sure it helps with my concerns.

I am looking for a lightweight and smooth applying product that will revitalize y lifeless, drawn, uneven skin.

    HELP!

    1. Hi Debbie,

There are a lot of products you can use for your skin. This includes Olay Total Effects and Regenerist. However, sometimes, it’s more about our lifestyle than the product we use. If you like the Clinique Moisture Surge and are not getting any negative side effects from it, then keep it.

Now, all you have to do is try out a new product, like choose one of the two reviewed on this page or some of the others recommended in the comment section. But before that, check out this article.

  12. I’m 27..I can see wrinkles under eye and below nose and have pimples on my face..Which one is effective for reduce wrinkles and pigmentation

  13. I’m 27…ova had pimples and wrinkles on my face..Please suggest which one suits for my skin …total effects or regenarist

  14. I’m 28 and my skin is looking dull and I can witness some fine lines under my eyes. So, I have recently started using Olay 7 in one day cream. And I’m liking it. Should I switch to microsculpting regenerist or the one I’m using is fine? Please suggest.

    1. Hi Kate,

Good to hear you like the Olay 7 in one cream. If you’re happy with the result you’re seeing from using it, there is no need to switch to another. Remember that not all products will suit your skin. When you get one that you like and suits you, stick with it. Only change when it stops working.

  15. Hi I am 34 and have vitiligo – therefore uses a lot of makeup every day

I find my skin not to be too problematic and if I have to choose a focus point it will be blacked pored due to all the makeup and maybe dryness?

I ave not used any face product except mostly soap and water thus far but would like to start a good routine with good product

    please advice me on this

    1. Hi Mathilda,

From what I’ve read in the past, Vitiligo doesn’t seem to have a cure. So, sorry for what you’re going through.
Also, I’ll like to say that if you’re not having facial problems except the one you outlined above, then there probably is no need to start using a facial product.

But if that’s your choice, let me know which of the below you intend.

I’ll like to ask if you’re looking to get a routine that can help minimize the blocked pores or if you’re just wanting to start using a face product.

There are many products that can help with blocked pores. And some creams exist that you can use before your makeup.

      Waiting for your reply.

  16. Hello I am in my late 40’s, have noticed some dark spots appearing on my face, and still have pores like I’m 20. Which would you recommend, Total Effects or Regenerist? Thank you for your help.

    1. Hi Michele,

Sorry for not getting to your question on time.

The Olay Regenerist offers both UV protection and deep hydration. These are the two most important things you need to keep your skin intact. The cream doesn’t leave behind creamy spots and is easily absorbed into the skin. You can try it.

  17. Hi, I’m 39 yrs old with oily T, large pores, and fine wrinkles. I’m trying to get into a routine, but I don’t know where to start or what to get. Would you be able to recommend something? I wrote down the 8 steps from a message above, thank you for that.

    1. Hi Monica,

You can start with the Olay Total Effects. It’s good for wrinkles and fine lines. Let me know if you have more questions.

  18. I have been using Olay Total Effects and Original serum for years. I thought I needed to use both so use the serum under the spf moisturizer. I got the micro sculpting serum when I ran out of original serum. Am I wasting my money by using both at once?

    1. Hi TC,

I want to try to understand your question. Do you mean you’re using the micro-sculpting serum and the Olay total effects moisturizer? If that’s the case, then you aren’t wasting money. This is because you can use your serum and moisturizer at the same time. You just have to make sure that you apply the serum before the moisturizer.

Let me know if I answered your question or not.

  19. Hi ,
I used to use total effects but then for some reason switched to a luxury brand .
I’m 56 years old I have combination skin but then sometimes my face gets really dry and itchy.
I was wondering whether to try the regenerist range . Especially the whipped cream with SPF 30 and the night cream .

    1. Hi Buky,

You can try the Regenerist brand if you want. But have you thought about the results when you used Total Effects? If it were compatible with your skin and you weren’t experiencing the dryness and itchiness, I’d stick with it.

But if you aren’t getting the result you want, you can then try the Regenerist and see if it’s better.

Let me know if you have more questions.

      Thank you for reading.

  20. I m 27 year old. I have some open pores and black spot and little bit wrinkles which product should i use total effect serum or regenrist serum

  21. Hi, am fairly new to using day and night creams. I bought olay total effects with spf in pump. I absolutely loved it but the only downside was that it only had spf 15 and I’ve read that my day cream should have at least spf 30.
I bought the regenerist micro sculpting night cream. I did like the results so I bought it in the spf 30 day pump. I like a pump for easier application it is still early days but I’m not sure if I should switch to total effects whip spf 30 as I did love the total effects pump.
Wondering if regenerist is overkill for my skin I am 24 this month but I do have fine lines/wrinkles on my forehead and eyes. Dry skin around nose, redness around nose and upper lip from allergies. Acne scars. Also sun is very strong where i am.
